I just put in his new wheel, And right when i put it in i put him back in his cage. and thats the first thing he went to[First running wheel ever] hes a dwarf hamster and is 2 inches[And hes not fat]. well he gets on it and starts walking on it and i think trying to find out what the heck that is. well he walks slowly on it and then gets off.. He has been in a exercise ball so he can go around in the house. but never a wheel inside, how long do you think it will take for him to know how to run in it?[ Note bought this about 5 hours ago. and its 7:20 p.m right now in my time zone.

And yes it is a Hard cover wheel so his little feet dont get trapped in the ones that have holes on em.

hampsters will take sometime to adapt to their surroundings...i dont know how long you have had him, but if this is the first few days you have had him, he still might be getting use to his enviorment. i also know there are 2 kinds of wheels; ones that are almost solid with a hole for them to get in and out of, and ones that are metal with little spaces in between. you might want to try out another kind if he does not addapt to that one....when i had a hampster, the exercise ball that i had was one where it could be used inside a cage, so you could use the exercise ball around the house (w/ the "closed lid") or in the cage (with the "open lid" so he could get in and out). hampsters are also nocturnal animals, so he might actully be running at night and not even know it!

what kind of wheel. if it is the kind with slits in it I have heard of hampster getting there foot caught and braking a leg. It should be a sold wheel. persoanlly I like the ball better they would roll all over the floor. maybe he has had enough exercise, but you do know that hamster are nocternal right? they play at night.

Maybe he doesn't like wheels. (unlikel, but slightl possible) He'll probably get it in the end. He seems really small and probably pretty young, so it's likely to be the first wheel he's ever used since sometimes they don't put wheels in the display cages where you might have gotten him.

this is the same thing that happens to my hamster

your hamster is running, but running at a time you are asleep or not here

maybe your hammy doesnt like people watching them run on their wheel
your hamster may feel like it is in danger, or simply unconfortable

if it's a plastic wheel built in then it might be pulling his fur.

and if it has just tiny metal bars to walk (or run) on it could be hurting his hands (paws).

i reccomend a metal wheel with a solid bottom and bars (buit in with the solid bottom).

just give him some time, like a day or two if he knows it moves and he goes in it, then pretty soon he will fell comfortable and run normally on it
