Perhaps they both resonate with the vibrations of "me-ism", self absorption & self importance. We Americans are very self absorbed. Tragically so in reference to both of these storylines.
The characters always desire what is forbidden to them. Also, a mistaken identity results in murder. Perhaps the characters that are killed deserved to die, but not for the reasons of their death. And almost no one mourned their death. The other characters are too busy with their own self-reflection.
