In the book, the Phantom was known for his optical illusions, torture chambers, and trap doors, so it probably was a trap door.

I would guess a trap door, actually. Since he /does/ throw his cloak over himself, I'm sure the bottom of the chair opens and he can crawl back stage or something.

if i remember rightly he disappears in a puff of smoke.I think thats correct
