How does the Phantom disappear in his chair at the end of the musical, Phantom of the Opera?

In the book, the Phantom was known for his optical illusions, torture chambers, and trap doors, so it probably was a trap door.

I would guess a trap door, actually. Since he /does/ throw his cloak over himself, I'm sure the bottom of the chair opens and he can crawl back stage or something.
