If you are in good physical shape and would like to "harvest" firewood, and have a pickup truck and a chainsaw, you can easily get a couple of cords of wood for free just driving around and picking up what trees you see felled by the roadside (ask the owner first). So the plus is that cost is minimal. But it's also labor intensive and burning it is messy. Wood bark and splinters and dirt all over the floor, gotta keep the stove pipe and chimney cleaned, and makes lots of ashes.

I imagine as oil prices go up and people start burning alternative fuels, pellet prices will go up, supply and demand.

Someone makes a stove that can burn pellets or corn kernels, and that sounds like the way to go... but the best would be if you could burn firewood OR pellets OR corn.

I've a Vermont Castings "Defiant" wood stove and have been harvesting and burning firewood for 20 years and love it.

When I lived in the mountains I bought a beautiful wood stove and it heated the whole cabin down and upstairs when I put the fan on...I loved it and it had a glass window in the front and you could see it burn, but others put their two cents in and said pellets were better, so to give you an honest answer, I dont know but I did enjoy my wood burning stove. Now i have fireplaces and don't bother, felt safer with the stove....

My dad swears by pellets. He used a wood stove for years but says he will never go back to it.

Well I'm going downstairs to feed my wood stove now, I like the wood cause it keeps me in shape through the winter months as far as heat wise their the same I'd say. My neighbor had a pellet and it was nice, alot easier no doubt but who was just as warm and in better shape!!! good luck. Oh yeah my wood hasn't cost me a dime in 30 yrs, plenty of wood roadside.

Pellet..easier to store pellets. Less mess to clean up...No chopping of the wood...no back aches
