When he coughs it feels like his veins are on fire and then his fingers and feet go numb. He's gained some weight over the last few months. He's had a couple occasions where he's had to go to the bathroom so bad all of a sudden and couldn't hold it. And he's had trouble sleeping. Can someone tell me what this might be? What could be wrong with him?

You do not want to mess with something like this. The best you could get here is an informed guess, but he really needs to see a professional for a straight answer.

He has some bizarre symtoms that's true...I wouldn't hazard a guess here, as that would be bad medicine. I think you should make an appt with your physician and have him checked out. Don't rely on the internet when it comes to your and your husband's health. Suggestions that people give are sometimes relieving to you, but not the best idea when there is a true problem. Medication should be prescibed by a doctor not an internet user.

There are free clinics in every city of any significant size. If you're like me you think free clinic means homeless drug addicts and prostitutes and std clinic.
I learned recently that the primary population served by the free clinics is the working person who doesn't have insurance.
Look up your local free clinics and get an appointment. Sounds like your husband should get a medical assessment.
Also, I know my hospital has a charity policy; we just posted the notices. They state that the hospital is approachable for people that cant afford health care.

coughing increases intra thecal pressure. I suspect, and given the fact that it is upper and lower extremity problems, that his problem may be upper motor neuron lesion.
Again, this is just going on the fact of numbness(nerve related) and upper and lower extremity, which makes me suspect something higher in the spinal cord(upper motor neuron).
The bathroom thing is not familiar to me, but nerves do control the bowels, bladder, and any other organ, cell, or tissue. Sleeping could be a number of things and may not be related to other problems that you mention.
My suggestion is to see a neurologist and let him do a good exam. Palpatory, Neurologic(reflexes), blood, urine, x-rays, etc.
If you need additional help, email me.
