Dear Ms Clea...
Oh, how I can relate!
But I'm putting the cart before the horse here.
If you're accustomed to taking laxatives to help this problem--STOP IT! Laxatives only add to your problem by taking your own muscle structure in the intestines and making it useless--yes, _useless._
This is why folks become DEPENDENT ON LAXATIVES; they've messed up their own regulation.
You've got to restructure your eating habits, starting with the first thing that goes into your belly in the morning.
1st Thing: WATER, preferably room temperature, distilled, a full 8-10oz glassful first thing on arising. You could add natural lemon juice if you like.
Do your normal ablutions (shower, shave, etc) and then have yourself a bowlful of instant oatmeal (cooks in 2 mins. in the microwave). I like to add half a cup of _applesauce_ to it with a bit of milk. You will have eaten a decent low calorie breakfast with one of the two FRUITS you'll need for the day.
Next, with either your usual juice or more water, take a STOOL SOFTENER (an over-the-counter product) DAILY and 1-1/2 or 2 Chewable Fiber Choice tablets.
THIS ROUTINE NEEDS TO BE A DAILY THING. START CARRYING WATER BOTTLES WITH YOU WHEREVER YOU GO.
Ideally, you'll be eating and drinking the lightest meals from breakfast through lunch and not eating heavily or starches past 8:00p.m. Doing this will make your system work extra hard to digest for the day.
Lunchtime, make sure you get some salad greens in for roughage, and try to either eliminate or greatly lessen your red meat intake.
Because straining at the stool is the cause of many problems with both hemmohoids and diverticulosis, it's your diet that's been all wrong for you.
Try adding more legumes, beans, lentils and such to your diet; they're both a high fiber source and good protein. If you think you'll become flatulent (windy) try "Beano."
Add Activa (a Dannon yoghurt product) to your diet along with a multi-enzyme formula (supplement) to help break down your food intake.
Try to limit the amount of processed sugars you eat.
Take an apple before bedtime as your second FRUIT; it promotes natural sleep.
I haven't said it throughout this whole thing, but...You'll need to drink no caffein, or carbonated drinks. Only drink WATER (Copiously)throughout your day as much as 48 ounces.
Once you get used to a regimen with the above changes/additions, your own bowels will have become regulated once again and the natural undulations that takes place in your intestines will have been restored. The extra water you're drinking along with the fruit and fiber will take care of the rest.
Don't think you can go back to your old ways of eating though...this is a life changing thing and you'll feel so much more energetic once you get your now sluggish system back to working right again.
You don't want to continue with your old eating habits. Diverticulosis becomes a severely painful Diverticulits (usually an excrusiating pain in your lower left quadrant)and you don't ever want to go through this. Personally, I'd rather give birth and I've done both!!!
I hope this helps move things along for ya, hon. You may be happily surprised at having more than one really good & easy BM each day. Halleluja!

Constipation can have a number of different causes.
1) Your nutrition may lack fiber (for now Metamucil may help but don't rely on it, change your diet and include more veggies such as broccoli, carrots, Calli flower, greens etc...
2) You may not be drinking enough water. Eight glasses a day includes ALL the liquids, inclusive the one contained in vegetables, soups, teas etc...(contrary to what one of the respondents said, you don't have to drink MORE water after a cup of tea, but keep the tea herbal, it is better for you).
3) You may need to improve the strength of your abdominal muscles. This is done with abs exercises (e.g. sit ups, etc...)
4) You may need some local massage to get rid of dried up stuff in the small intestine, you can do it yourself, just rub your hands gently in circular movements around your lower belly, use something to help your hands glide, but not too much. The skin needs to be rubbed a bit, not be totally oily.
Try all four, since I can't say which one is causing you the problem. Nothing above will have any bad side effects, much to the contrary, they all will improve your well being.
Good luck.

The key is fiber. Natural fiber is best like bran flakes or my favorite (honey bunches of oats) , but if you don't do cereal, salads are good and fruit, but not banana's. Banana's constipate you. If you can't get fiber naturally you should try fiber tablets, also drink lots of water. That really helps. If all else fails then take a gentle over the counter laxative. OH another thing that really helps if you can tolerate it is prune juice or milk of magnesia. Personally I hate liquids like that so I go with fiber tabs and water. Good luck

Usually fiber works well for constipation. Taken on a regular basis, fiber should stop your constipation. Also, make sure you're drinking plenty of water (not sodas), as being dehydrated can also cause constipation. Best of luck to you.

This article solved all my constipation issues couple of years ago:
Constipation is a big problem in the western world.
According to the medical community, constipation is defined as having 1 bowel movement every 2 to 3 days. But as holistic health care professionals, we know that's absolute nonsense!
For optimal health, you should be passing 2-3 bowel movements each day! Anything less is considered constipation. If you've ever had a colon cleanse, good for you. If not, you need to read the following important information regarding constipation and colon health.
What Causes Constipation?
Â
Constipation is usually a result of years of abusing your digestive system through poor food choices and not listening to your body. Chronic intake of foods that irritate your digestive and intestinal system eventually causes them to function at a sub-optimal level. For instance, non-foods like coffee, refined sugar, alcohol, and other processed foods stress your colon and digestive system and eventually hinder their function.
For optimal colon health, the goal should be to remove these irritating foods and provide your system with nutrients that will allow it to heal and function as it should.
Being constipated can also come about by resisting the urge to do your "business". At a very young, we simply went when we needed to go - no problem except for the clean-up our parents were subjected to. But as we age, we tend to suppress our body's natural urge to defecate. Whether it be class or work schedules or travel commitments, we've started to ignore our body's many cries to head to the toilet.
In the end, we have instructed our body that we will have a bowel movement (or at least try to) on our terms, when we're willing and ready. However, it isn't that simple because your body knows when it needs to go. Passing a bowel movement is not a logical decision, it is a primal need your body is destined to satisfy.
So it is our fault, our lifestyle, and our poor dietary choices that has led to being constipated.
Why is Constipation Dangerous?
This could quickly turn into a very lengthy discussion but we'll give you the essentials. The problem with being constipated is that your body's waste does not get to its final destination - the toilet.
Rather, it sits in your colon, putrefying and expelling more toxins back into your body. This is called autointoxication and is a serious health concern if it persists over time.
Think about it. If you were to let garbage pile up in your home for weeks, months, or years can you imagine the type of disgusting and toxic environment you'd be creating?
Well, the same thing happens in your body if your "garbage" is not regularly removed.
Over time, these endogenous toxins will be stored in your fat tissue which includes your fat cells, brain, and nervous tissue. It's no wonder there's a considerable correlation between constipation, autointoxication, and degenerative diseases!
Natural Constipation Remedies
The first thing is to listen to your body. If you need to go, then go!
Second, remove the irritating foods that we spoke about above.
Third, drink plenty of water. Constipation can also be a result of being dehydrated. Provide your body with more water and it will assist your waste removal.
Fourth, eat more fiber. The goal (from an overall health perspective) is to hit 35 grams of fiber per day. But really, are you going to count? Probably not. Therefore, simply by eating more whole foods or even following a raw food diet will greatly assist you.
The goal is to get both soluble and insoluble fiber. Ground flaxseeds are a great source of balanced fiber and a terrific source of omega-3 fatty acids.
Fifth, getting more essential fatty acids (omega-3s) will provide the lubrication required to allow your colon to pass along the waste smoothly and effortlessly. If you strain to pass a movement, that's a good indication you could use some more lubrication.
Finally, you need to follow a detox diet that will cleanse your body. If you've been constipated for some time, then you need to face facts and realize that your body is a toxic feeding ground! The only way to better your health and prevent future problems is to get the waste out of your body through regular bowel movements and other means that will detoxify your body.
You don't have to be a prisoner to constipation any longer. Allow us to show you the light...
Here is a a 30-day food-based cleansing program that has helped thousands of people lose weight, cleanse their bodies of toxic overload, and restore incredible health. For information on the cleanse visit www.thecleanseforlife.com .

1. Drink enough water! Dehydrated people are often constipated. You need 8, 8-oz glasses per day of water. Caffeinated beverages don't count, because they actually rob your body of water. You need to drink TWO glasses of water to make up for every caffeinated beverage you consume.
2. Eat a varied diet with lots of fresh fruits and veggies and plenty of fiber.
3. Avoid processed foods, starchy foods, and sugar.
4. Exercise!

Part of the answer is in your question. Something has stopped. Where are you constipated? Is your sinus plugged up? Are your intestines not moving? Is your colon full but not moving? Also the lymphatic system can be constipated. And there is my favorite, mental constipation.

Drink lots of water and eat green leafy vegies and fiber filled foods. But without the water and fiber things won't move along. Constipation has already stopped you want it to move.
