Basically bryophytes are amphibious plants.so they need water at least in some stages of reproduction
one more thing they produce spores in their asexual reproduction phase and the spores need water to germinate and produce gametophyte of sexual phase

They have flagellated sperm that need water or some sort of fluid for the sperm to be able to swim to the egg. Plants do not need water because they have pollen which can be carried by animals or spores which can be carried by wind.

The pollen grain doesn't grow a pollen tube I think. The sperm has to swim.
