The average life span of a decent laptop is 3 - 5 years. 7 Months should be more than fine. Common issues are:
Over heating
Dropping
Spillage of liquid
Damaging screen by over use
Damaging battery by over charging
Breaking keys of the keyboard
Breaking the touch pad
These luckily can all be fixed with relative ease.
Updating software and all applications could be an issue as well.
I also strongly recommend you revert to buying XP with your system as Vista does not work very well on laptops.
Also most modern laptops can have the cases replaced as well.

It all depends on how you treat it. If you haul it out into the Sahara desert and plug it full of mud it will be ugly . If you treat it nicely and close it up and don't let the cat walk on it, it probably will be good as new for a long time .Go and buy it already, it will be great .
Enjoy !

Well it depends if your laptop is white or silver they tend to look awful after a few months, black ones tend to stay looking good for years . . .
