I do it because I'm desprately hungry for nothing we have.

Personally I keep returning in the hope that I will be blessed with some inspiration.
You see, the first time you think, no I don't fancy any of that, then the second time your're a bit hungrier and some of it start to look interesting.
Usually on the fourth or fifth time, I'm convinced I can create something out of any old wierd combo of what ever's in there and i'm flippin' hungry.
Sometime's it's a disaster, but that's how i discovered that mashed avacado, black pepper, tabasco and cheese on toast is yummy! :>)

lol, good question. I would guess that it could be two things. Number 1, people can't remember what is in their fridge at all times and aimlessly gravitate toward the hunger reliever. Number 2, people live on hope. They hope that something appetitizing will show up. They feel that they might have overlooked something and it is just there waiting for them. We certainly wouldn't want to overlook some leftover pizza and have it go to waste.

Because they are starving or munched, i've done it loads of times, in fact i've done it 5 times tonight already and i'll probably do it another 5 times "And i still dont know what for" " I'm looking forward to the answer too".

I think it's a (falsely optimistic) hope that maybe there's something we missed -- somehow we overlooked that delicious cheesecake that got pushed behind the leftover mac and cheese, rotting brussels sprouts, and out-of-date yogurts! ;-)
