If you are using a DSL modem you do not have a built in hardware firewall. If you are using a DSL Router is should come with a firewall. Be sure the Routers firewall provides to way(incoming and outgoing) protection.
This Google page has much info on Hardware Firewalls.

Software Firewalls: Zone Alarm and Comodo are two free and excellent firewalls. I do not use either of those firewalls. I have a Hardware and the Windows Firewall that protects me excellently.
My neighbor had Zone Alarm and constantly complained of download problems. About a month ago I suggested he try Comodo. He loves it.
Whichever Firewall you decide to use, set the Firewall to Stealth Mode. This prevents the Firewall from answering Pings.

Of all the firewalls ive tried the best one seems to be zonealarm pro,and any router that is worth its salt will have a firewall built in.

a good router will have at least one if not two firewalls in it, its the way to go, i do like a software firewall also, as you have more control of what gos out. zone alarm or comdo are good. and free.

I have really appreciated Norton Internet Security 2007. It is very unobtrusive, and gets high marks and good reviews for dependability. It doesn't pester me all the time.
