1962 was the first year of the suffix A plate, however very few were made as the individual registration districts were to use up the previous system of numbering first.
However the cities like London started the A plate and so the year letter as people bought the cars when the plate came in to indicate a new car.
The motor trade then complained that country district registrations were lagging and that thus sales were falling as people went to town for the A plate so the annual system started with the plate changed on the 1st of January. This caused a problem for the manufacturers so yet another change was made about 1964 when the change date was moved to August.
That is the history of the plates,

My name starts with A, it started in 1983
Uk number plate History is below
The first series of number plates were issued in 1903 and ran until 1932, using the series A1–YY9999. The letter or pair of letters indicated the local authority in whose area the vehicle was registered, for example A — London, B — Lancashire, C — West Riding of Yorkshire.
By 1932, the available numbers within this scheme were running out, and an extended scheme was introduced. This scheme consisted of three letters and three numbers, taken from the series AAA1 to YYY999. Note that certain letters — I, Q and Z — were never used, as they were considered too easy to mistake for other letters or numbers
By 1982, the year suffixes had reached Y and so from 1983 onwards the sequence was reversed again, so that the year letter — starting again at "A" — preceded the numbers then the letters of the registration.
Note: There is difference between A suffix and A prefix series, Prefix series is reg as we know so it started in 1983, but letter A was used in 1963as suffix and are normally classified as dateless plates.
