I use my personal computer for basically e-mail, downloading music, schoolwork, etc. I'm not really into games or anything, I don't need a webcam or anything like that either. I want to spend as litlle as possible. I need some advise on screen size, processor type/speed, RAM, etc. I want it to be fast but I dont want to spend 2 grand.

A laptop that I recommend for you should be setup like this: screen size 12 to 15.4 inches, processor should be either a Pentium M or a Dual-Core that's one of the slower clock speeds, between 512 and 1024 megs of RAM. Try Toshiba, Gateway, and HP for laptops with this setup under $2K.

First, shop around. You can buy a laptop online and in the stores. Once you know what feautres you want, shop around.
I bought a laptop recently and so far so good.
First, I would look for processor speeds. 1.5GHZ is standard but I got 2.0 so it would work well with my hi speed internet. Next, check the memory size. On desktops they are going to 4GBs. In a laptop, a standard is usually 500 GB. Also, look for software already loaded. Like music, look for a laptop that has a service on it like Rhapsody. Also, check for connections (USB ports for sure, data line, etc). Make sure it has a DVD/CD writer. All in all, I paid less than $1000 and got all of that, by shopping around!

Go to HPshopping.com and start with their model that "begins" around $600. Upgrade it to include a Core2Duo processor and at least 1 Gig of and you should be in business for around 1 thousand dollars. You mention going "as cheap as possible" and then mention going "fast". The 2 concepts are incompatible but the good news is that your target price is way too high!! Get Windows Vista if you want to; I'm in no hurry, frankly.
