If your Mom was claiming Head Of Household, and supporting them, such as buying their groceries, paying for the roof over their head etc. I don't see how your Mom could be in trouble. I do hope though, that your Mom has an expired check, or some proof that she gave the money to your sister in law.I don't know why she would ever need it, if in fact your sister in law wasn't doing anything to help support them.

If your mom was supporting your sister in law and her daughter then I am pretty sure that she can not get in trouble.

Was your sister in law working? Did your sister in law claim
her daughter....... these are things to take into account.
