Why can't it be the d-word?

That depends on whether your society considers sexuality as the strongest taboo. In societies with a strict religious code a blasphemous swearword would be much more shocking than a sexual one. Personally, I find racist or sexist swearwords the worst. So give me an f-word anytime, but keep your n-words for yourself....

There is no other word that is as versatile as the word f---.
It can be a noun, an adjective, a verb, etc...
It can be used at almost any part of the sentence and still make sense. Hence it is the most commonly used "cuss"word. The sound of the word is also versatile..can be said in short burst or in a long expression.
The sheer pronunciation of the word is powerful as well as it begins and ends with strong forceful sound.

That's actually debatable these days. You hear it everywhere. Now the C- word on the other hand, I dare you to say that in a crowded theater and get away with it.

because, then, the word in question, above starting with an "f" would be giving people heart attacks instead of the finger.
