Well I'm not a Brit, I'm a Canuck, and I hate guns. Our society is totally different from that of the USA as is our "constitution" for lack of a better word.
We developed in our prospective countries in different ways.
To me, how I see things is that we never had the need for guns in Canada. The US on the other had has always been divided (although you'll never admit it) and guns have always been a part of your heritage. You had your civil war etc. and thus in the end have really have never felt safe even within your own borders.
A great majority of the people inherently carried this distrust and insecurity (and guns) throughout the generations and made it part of your constitution that you have a right to protect yourself. I'm sure they meant protection--from yourselves--within your own borders there.
There are many who feel safe with gun in hand, and there are many who feel that gun in hand empowers many dangerous people, and makes the world unsafe.
Personally if everyone laid down thier guns, the world would be a better place, but there is too much paranoia, hate and fear for that to ever happen.
Guns from the US are making their way into Canada, and they only go into the hands of drug lords, punks and gangsters. It's no different in Canada than in the middle east or Cambodia or anywhere warlords reign. The bad guys win, the good guys lose. That's the only true fact about guns.

I may have an answer with a unique perspective. A yank who lived a while in Epsom.
I live in Detroit . born and bred. gun fire at night is something you get used to. a friend of mine from england stayed here a while and it rattled her. I stayed in England for a year and was amazed at how quiet it was not to mention how much safer it felt in comparison. that is pathetic.
secondly I am a liberal who owns guns ! I had hunters training when I was eight and I'm female. We are far from being called white trash hicks. so don't think it's just moronic inbred cons that own guns. the difference is I don't think an ak-47 or any assault rifle should be in the hands of a citizen at will.
I do believe all perspective owners of weapons should be not only regeistered for all weapons but mentally tested before hand. ( I also think they should be before they have kids too , barring people who are prone to being abusive or unable to deal in some way with kids. ending abuse should start with prevention and since people arn't doing it on thier own. ,,,,)
I do think alot of gun owners are low class morons. Especially those in the NRA. they are fringe. those paranoid kooks who shouldn't be allowed to have weapons to begin with. They can call themselves militia all they want but it's just a mask for paranoid bigoted and usually white ignorant men who feel threatened and who don't want to pay taxes yet enjoy the benifits of said taxes.

I don't think that wanting to protect one's home and family is "red-necky". If so, then I'm a redneck. Anyway, had it not been for those Brits, the right to bear arms wouldn't even be a right in this country. Thank god our forefathers had the right to own guns otherwise we might still be under British rule--or worse.

it is a variety of people. it is not only about guns. it is also about the rights each one of us were given.laws were supposed to protect us from each other no ourselves, either.
but that's changed as well. only a few of us still have the gun rights left. to put it perspective cars kill more people that guns,so let's get rid of the cars to, then the doctors.that's why i am an advocate. not to have the gun but the right to have it is important. just my 75 cents

The 2nd amendment of teh constitution guarantees the right to bear arms. All of the gun laws walk a fine line close to the amendment. Gun collectors and people who buy guns for hunting buy them legally. They wait for approval, keep their guns away from kids, childlocks, etc. The gun related homicides happen because of people buying guns illegally. The school shootings happen because idiot parents don't lock their guns up and keep them away from their kids and of course illegal purchasing. It is easier for a kid to buy an illegal gun than a 6 pack of beer. The issue has become too sensationalized.

NBC is not a credible source for information any more. The more biased left they are, the less meaningfully they're able to present news and commentary.

Most are a bunch of gun totten, repubs who couldn't understand the constitution if they studied it for 10 years, They think that it's ok to carry full auto rifles, bazookas, tommy guns and hand grenades. They call this, the right to bear arms. How uninformed they are.
