I can give you my economics paper from first year. It's about the privatization of the healthcare industry. However, it's based on the Canadian healthcare system. And I don't know if it is micro or not.

For microeconomics, there are many topics. Go to this website and skim over a few topics: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microeconomics

I would do something like International Trade, or Industrial Organization because with those topics, it's easy to relate it to real-world issues. It might be difficult to write an essay on just theories and concepts. Maybe you could also write about something that relates to the budget (i.e., fiscal expenditures, taxes).

One that is a "hot topic" is minimum wage legislation. Info can be found on the department of labor home page. You could discuss how some states chose to have minimum wages above the federal minimum and what you think are the advantages and disadvantage of an increase in the Federal minimum wage. If both houses can get their proposed bills passed, president Bush will sign off. This is a very current a relevant topic which most young people find interesting because it affect their pay checks!

I have read the responses that have been given so far and they are all good and acceptable. I am a college instructor (accounting/speech/computer). My suggestion would be first and foremost to choose a topic that is interesting to you. If you are not interested in that particular subject then you are less likely to put forth the intended effort that is needed. I for one, think the minimum wage is going to affect both the small (mom and pop) businesses and large corporations and this might be something that needs to be investigated and written about.
