The middle name is where you can hide the ugly or undesierable name that is important to your other half or your family tradition... AKA lets pretend your mother in laws name is Gertrude, and it's their family tradition to name the first born granddaughter after the person who is currently named gertrude... At least it's the middle name...
:):):)
Or a good place to put the second name when you can't decide which one you want.

My mom doesn't have a middle name, so she wrote our first middle and last names on every conceivable school form... lunch money envelopes, field trips, you name it. I dropped my middle name when I got married and replaced it with my maiden name.

Well, for us it was different for each child. With our daughter, her first name is my husband's grandmother's name, and so I wanted to get one of my grandmothers in there as well. With our son, we really couldn't agree on names at all, so I choose the first name and he choose the middle. It also can help differentiate with common first names-my husband, his dad and grandfather all are John's.

So your child has options to go by a different name if the first one doesn't work out for him or her. Also gives the parents the ability to honor name sakes etc.

i think most people use middle names in honour of people whom they are close to in their family or after a really close friend .
it also helps when you have a really common last name i suppose.
