I have to agree with those that said The Rolling Stones, Janis Joplin, AC/DC, Led Zepplin, and the Beatles. For me though it would have to be Aerosmith. Aerosmith influenced all the rock bands from the eighties, and still influence our bands today. Led Zepplin opened for them back when they were first getting started, Motley Crue took Steven's glamorous gypsy-esque look and turned it up to become their signature style, Def Leppard members have claimed to be fans and Jon Bon Jovi also imaged himself after the sultry lead singer. Slash of Guns N Roses is quoted on idolizing Joe Perry, and the band's cover of 'Mama Kin' become a hit for them. Aerosmith is definitely a influentail band.

Probably Elvis. He made rock & roll socially acceptable for white people to enjoy. Without Elvis then rock & roll would have not caught on as quickly and then modern rock would not have progressed as far as it has.
I think Richie Blackmore has done a lot for rock by adding innovative guitar play. Also the band Jethro Tull has mixed rock with other genres and intruments creating many new styles and streams of music.

Wow, it's so hard for me to say, but if I had to choose I'd say The Beatles because even they influenced Led Zepplin and 100s of other bands who influenced millions of others and so on. So though The Beatles are highly influential directly they are also influential indirectly. And for those who are saying Metallica and what not learn your rock history please.

It couldn't be anyone else other than the beatles. They came first, there was no rock and roll band before them on such a commercial scale. Definately the beatles.
