I swear I remember an episode where a state school representative was visiting the school, he was looking out the window, down on the kids playing in recess, and said something along the lines of, this [Springfield elementary] will soon be the best school in MISSOURI. I WOULD BET A GOOD AMOUNT OF MONEY THAT SPRINGFIELD IS IN MO.

I don't think its a real state because the other cities are made up Ogdenville, Shelbyville

In the episode "Behind The Laughter", from Season 11, it is revealed that the Simpsons are a "Northern Kentucky Family". On subsequent airings of this episode, the location was changed to Southern Missouri.

That is true, but after he stated that "Springfield was rated the worst school in missouri" he said "So that's why we moved it to it's current location".

Its fictional since the series has many jokes that dont lead to a certain state. In the movie it says its surrounded by 4 states that are scattered around the US so I dont think we will ever find out, Maybe by process of elimination you can get close

I don't think so,because I have seen episodes where they joke about which state they're in (i.e. Marge said something like "in Springfireld...o hi____" to whomever she was talking to-among other jokes).Some people say Massachusetts because Mayor Quimby sounds like senator Ted Kennedy.They make reference to many of the states as a teaser,I think.It will be interesting to see if it's ever revealed tho.
