The NCAA has purchased the rights of the NIT and therefore decided to cut down the number of teams from 40 to 32. This bascially hurts all the teams who finish at or above .500 who dont make the NCAA tourney because if a team wins their conference in the regular season and loses in the conference tournament and doesnt make the NCAA as an at-large they automatically get a bid to the NIT. This means there are few available bids to those mid-majors who finished with a good record. And there is a womens NIT..same format..

40.

40 teams make the NIT. The bracket is kind of weird with 4 sections and seeds of 1 thorugh 10.
