I work for a church that runs a thrift store. They get all of there stuff through donations that people don't want and instead of throwing it out they give it to the church. The church prices it and sells it to the community. Most of the stuff that comes in is clothing and shoes. ( all the money made by the store helps the community) The church doesn't make a profit.
If you want to start your own second hand store check out churches in your area and ask if they are getting donations and if they can help you.
You can also buy from thrift stores and mark the price up to make a profit.

Give little for things. Sell them for about double or triple what you gave for them. Antique dealers can go to a garage sale for instance and find things that others don't know is worth anything, then sell it for what it is worth.

well they usually get the items for free, like donations to the goodwill, then they mark them at whatever price they want so it is usually always a profit

buy low sell high. simple economics. plus knowing what your buying and what you can make for it in the right market is a big bonus
