Was he actually clinically insane or just a victim of his own power. I heard he made his horse Consul and named himself a God, and that he was so bad that people named him a demon when he died. (Just what I heard, don't know the truth of these rumors)

Considering that the field of Psychology wasn't as advanced as it is now, it's hard to determine if he was actually "clinically insane" or not. Considering his actions, I would have to say that he had some actual mental problems and was more than just a "victim of his own power".

Just keep in mind that actual references to Caligula are few and far between, and it is speculated that much of the evil that he supposedly did was based off of material that was overly biased against him. It would be like 2000 years from now the only remaining document on President George W. Bush is "Ferenheit 9/11."

For example, the appointing of his horse to the senate was not an actual serious attempt, it was simply Caligula razzing the senate by threating to do so, showing them how weak they had become

He was a second-generation of at least two incestous relationships, so he didn't have much to start with. A suspected dose of syph didn't help. Yes, I'd say he was insane by any standard.

He was a little drunk on his own power. Not that unusual during those times. But reading about him I'd have to say he was insane as we describe it today.

All true, plus he slept with his sister. Crazy as they come. Started out OK but had a sickness in his early 20's, and was nuts after that.
