It's possible that he was gay, but it's just as likely (maybe even more so) that he was totally straight, and broke up with you because the thought that you might believe the rumors about him was a threat to his masculinity and an insult to your trust in him. There's no real way to know if he doesn't fess up to being gay, because if he's not gay you won't necessarily believe him if he keeps saying you were wrong.
