I didn't get mine till I was 14-years-old. If she doesn't get it by the time she is 16, then it's time to see an ob-gyn. BTW, both my grandmothers were 15, when they got theirs. Diet palys an important part. Many pediatricians believe that girls are getting there 1st menses earlier because children are heavier now than they ever were. So, if she's a normal weight, then it's probably nothing to worry about.

Relax. Both of you. She may not get it till she's 16. It's ok. We all got it at different ages. She's fine.
It means nothing to have it or not have it. It doesn't make her less of a person. I don't know what she expects is going to happen when she gets "it"? Suddenly feel womanly? Grown up? She must think her friends that have gotten it are special. This probably won't help her. We all have to find out ourselves.

Everyone is different I started mine when I was 9 and now I'm 32 and in pre-menopause. I had a few friends growing up that started their period all at different times one didn't start hers until she was 16. I can say that I don't miss it that's for sure with the cramps and mood swings and everything else that goes with it. Tell her not to rush it because it will come don't worry and hopefully not in an embarrassing situation like mine was.

Everyone is just different. It varies a lot. I didn't get mine until I was 15. Looking back, I'm was glad it was later rather than earlier because then I didn't have to deal with it at an earlier age!

When a girl gets her period depends some on when her mom got it, but also a lot on her height and weight. The research out there shows that girls get their periods when their bodies have a certain percentage of body fat. It's sort of a trigger that says to her brain that she has the energy stored to carry a baby, which is obviously the reason a girl starts her period. It could just be that your niece doesn't have that much body fat yet. It will happen, and please remind her not to starve herself. it's normal to gain a bit of weight in puberty.

You sound like a great aunt...she will mature to a woman when her body is ready. There is no hurring mother nature. SHe does what she is going to do, when she is ready to do it! THe fact that she is experiencing some cramping means that she may be soon to begin her menses. I'm sure she feels like odd in her group, but tell her that there is nothing wrong, and try and be patient. If she really is concerned, take her to the doctor or a nurse practitioner for an exam...I am sure they will tell you the same thing.

One of my oldest and bestest friends didn't start 'till she was 21. She'll be 32 this summer and has two kids and is doing fine.

Tell her it's different for every girl. Her time will come when it comes.
And, when Mom got it doesn't necessarily determine when she will. My mom got hers at 15, and was worried that I'd be that long. She needn't have worried-I got mine at 12!

Being that your niece is tall and weighs 125 pounds it might take some time before she will get her period. i went to school with a lot of girls who didn't get their first period until their sophmore year of high school. Tell her that every girl is different and once she starts having them she'll be wishing she didn't, trust me. Periods are a pain in the @$$ especially if they're painful.
