No. The courts have no place in the game. They can police it themselves and since the Isles don't have a Smith, your opinion carries no weight. They do have a Smyth however and a Simon.

THAT IS STUPID (below poster) that said if it is a crime on the street, then it should be on the ice. Checking somebody into a wall would be a crime too by that theory. What about a tackle in football-that is a crime on the street. Come on. Apples and oranges-GET REAL.

It's Chris Simon not Ryan Smyth. I think the police are looking at this for assault charges. If you remember of have seen a highlight of when Mcsorely slashed Brashear in the head a few years ago, he was put on probation or something like that.

I like what Barry Melrose said earlier today. 40 games (carrying over into next year) and this years playoffs.

Weird how 2 years ago to the day Bertuzzi mugged Moore.

Edit: Wait, we're not talking about yesterday?

you think its bad in today's NHL well i guess you wish you where never born in the 40's and 50's when there where many, many more stick swinging to the head. look at what happened to Maurice "The Rocket" Richard when he was smashed over the head in a game and the ref didn't call anything so the Rocket got back up and slashed the player over the back then fought two guys at once then the stupid *** ref grabbed the Rocket's arm's and was defencive against the other player that punched the Rocket right in the head and so the Rocket turned around and punched the ref which the ref clearly deserved. if you take out fighting you will see more stick swinging and head hunting then ever. fighting is part of this game and it will never go away.

When I read this question I thought about Billy Smith from the dynasty days of the early 80's... but I think the statute of limitations has run out since that's like over 20 years ago :) ... but some of his stick swinging incidents were certainly an assault with a deadly weapon... might as well throw Hextall into the big house as well while we area at it. :)

Ahhh... those were the days.

LMAO - You mean Simon. And if it's a crime on the street why do you get to get away with it if you are wearing a team uniform? My question is why didn't Ray Emery's slash to the head warrant the same suspension. It was deliberate and an attempt to injure and he should not be playing now.

Did we take a time machine back to when Billy Smith whacked #99 with his goalstick in the Final?

Yes, Billy Smith's beard should be San Diego Chargered by presiding Judge Dan Fouts' beard. You might want to patent that time machine of yours and maybe it'll add a fact and grammar checker to it.

Oh, yeah, and Chris Simon should miss the rest of the season including the playoffs as well as 15 games in 07/08.

Yes, they CAN police it themselves. The problem is that they (the NHL) DON'T.

That is for the DA's office to decide based on what they think intent was and whether or not they think they have a case. Based on what I've heard so far, I would.

And as far as what the NHL does, they should suspend him for LIFE.

It will hurt Simon, and it will hurt the Islanders.

And the next time a goon thinks about doing something similar, he will have second thoughts, and it will HELP hockey.

Think about it.

Not unless they find a Smith of the Islanders who was breaking the law.

Do you mean Simon?

No but he deserves getting suspended for the rest off the season for that cheap, no good, s!&@#% hit!

Suspension is enough; Nassau County has enough problems of it's own that require attention.
