I think the most important thing is structure.

Most American pop songs go

ABABCBB

that is, verse, chorus, verse, chorus, bridge, chorus ,chorus.

Mix it up, but keep it fairly simple.

Other tips:

Consistant rhythm and rhyme scheme
Use Hooks (funky key change for the chorus, dropped bar in the bridge, etc.)
Keep solos short
Don't change tempo, but DO change the dynamic once in a while, but not all the time.
Sing in a comfortable range, but push it sometimes for effect
Sing with your voice, not someone else's
Write lyrics that are consise, but a little vague. (Unless it's country music-then just make it obvious)
If your friends might know what your song is about, maybe sing it when they aren't at the show. (I have made this mistake.)

a) it has to be lyrics that mean something to you
b) do not make all your songs sound the same like a lot of rap and stuff
c) there are a lot of basic drumming beats that will fit into the style of song and you can pick that l8r.
d) if you rhyme, don't do the eminem crap where one line is 27 syllables and the line it rhymes with is 5 syllables long. that bothers people.
