Congestive Heart Failure, tell him to put his feet up. This will make it easier for the heart to pump, and reduce vascular insufficiency. And get to the doctor, or take him to the ER.

The poor circulation likely has a part in the problem, he also could be suffering from Diabetes. Gout also causes swelling, and severe pain, generally around the big toe. Arthritis in it's Rhematic form. Have you not contacted a doctor about this? I suggest you do, whatever the reason, something is surely wrong.

Could be diabetes... or with poor circulation there is a good chance it could be Raynard's Disease. I have had Raynard's since the age of 8, now 22 and my hands, feet and lips often get very cold and blue even in the summer. The doctor could prescribe heart medication that will help the flow of his blood and make the swelling go down. It is called "clubbing" when swelling is associated with Raynard's.

It sounds as though he has venous stasis. That means the blood is not pumped back up to the heart because the veins cannot do their job. He is at high risk for venous stasis ulcers, which means sores that he gets on his lower legs will not heal well.
He may also be in congestive heart failure, which means his heart cannot pump strong enough to push the blood through; therefore the blood and fluid backs up into the rest of his body.
He needs a chest x-ray, dopler pulse checks, and other lab work. He could need diuretics (water pills) and heart medication. He needs to see his doctor asap.

Is he a diabetic? Does he suffer from Congestive Heart Failure?
Or does he havew renal disease? THese questions pertain to the problem with edema of the legs and feet. One helpful measure is for him to sit with his feet up...like in a recliner chair. Some people will have foot/leg edema from what is called dependent edema...meaning with his legs hanging down to the floor and he is in a sitting position, the circulation is cut off because his groin is cutting down on the blood flow to his lower extremities. I hope this somewhat answers your question. If he is not in the care of a physcian, he needs to be.

Time to take him to the doctor friend.
Usually swelling of the extremities like the legs could mean congestive heart failure or high cholesterol.
Health to you!!
