Is it safe to get a perm while I'm pregnant?
What little evidence there is indicates that getting a perm or chemically straightening your hair is no cause for concern. The fumes might be annoying, but the exposure probably isn't significant enough to have any effect on your baby. Some hair-processing solutions may use solvents, and while there is concern about the effects of solvents on a developing baby, that's most likely an issue only for women who work around solvents all day and develop symptoms from the exposure.
We've all seen pregnant hairdressers working in the salon and they seem to do okay. It's not so much that getting the perm is a problem. It's that your hair isn't going to respond in a predictable manner when you're pregnant. The hormones of pregnancy change the composition and texture of your hair. So the perm may or may not hold

Hi,
My hairdresser told me that the chemicals they use these days in perms are very safe in pregnancy. Basically, I would suggest that any risks at all in pregnancy are best not to take. There are many things out there in our environments that "could" be safe for our pregnancies, but no one really knows for sure. Everyone reacts differently to different chemicals/environments. Just think...wouldn't you feel better knowing that you didn't take any risks at all during your pregnancy? The alternative is to take one or two risks and then wonder why your child developed certain allergies or problems later in life and wonder if it was because of something you did when you were pregnant. Better to play it safe and not perm your hair and be confident that you did your best to deliver a healthy baby. Just a few more months to go and then you can go pamper yourself at a salon. I hope this helps! Of course it is only my opinion and I do know people who have permed their hair and hadn't had any problems with their babies. There are definately lots of things we miss being able to do when pregnant. If your current perm is growing out, maybe think about investing in some straightening shampoo and a hair straightening iron and just straighten out those old curls and give yourself a new look for awhile. Good luck with your decision.

I would say to just wait until after the baby is born... not because it will go into your bloodstream through your scalp (which is not try btw) but because the chemicals that you'll ingest may make you sick, also there's a good chance that it won't take like normal because of all the changes that your body is going through. Did you know that we don't lose as much hair while pregnant? That's why we seem to have more hair.. :P
As for hair dye, that's an old wives tale too, it's perfectly safe to dye your hair while you're pregnant.
I've read about this in either What to Expect While You're Expecting or Your Pregnancy Week by Week, just can't recall which one..
I'm 31 weeks now and I've dyed my hair several times during this pregnancy and I"m sure my baby is fine.

my doctor told me i could perm my hair and dye it if i want to. What little evidence there is indicates that getting a perm or chemically straightening your hair is no cause for concern. I wouldn't imagine being nappy headed for 9 months!!

No do not perm your hair because their chemicals in it that may harm the baby. One other thing when you are pregnant your hair will grow at so perming it is not because you will be perming it again in about maybe 11/2 or 2 weeks. Get some braids or ponytail.

I wanted to perm my hair while pregnant with my 2nd child. I was told not to by my doctor b/c the chemical fumes will hurt the baby. Ever have your hair permed before? Gosh I can hardly stand the smell myself, its so strong and powerful, i don't want my baby to be around it. Wait till after the baby is born.

no it is not ok to die or perm your hair when you are preganant. The chemicals soak into your scalp and skin, very harmful for the baby. Also did you know that you should never clean a cat litterbox when you are pregnant becuase of the amonia. Becareful when using any chemical on your skin or cleaning supplies that you use in your home hope this is helpful i have 2 young children.

I'd say no. Each person is different but it's better to be safer than sorry; would you rather have a child that has a mental handicap for the rest of their life or pretty hair until it grows out? Just wait.

I'm not sure about perming due to the chemicals you will inhale. i know the doctor told me it was OK to dye my hair with a dye that doesn't have peroxide

My doctor told me it is not safe. She told me highlights might be ok because they don't directly touch your scalp. You really need to compare the benefits of having a perm right now to the benefits of having a healthy baby. I think it is an easy choice
I choose to wait for them until after I give birth-just to be safe:)
