We learn from our environment. Unfortunately, we learn the wrong lessons in life or we find wrong meaning in our environment. A smart person consistently extracts the most accurate meaning, fastest way possible. A smart person learns, adopts, and utilizes his or her previous experience much quicker than an ordinary being. With this capability, you can be a smart doctor, a smart lawyer, a smart hot dog seller or anyone smarter than your peers in any field.

I don't like defining "being smart" for the simple fact that everyone is particularly clever about a particular subject along the way, so, everyone is "smart"

Most of smartness could be classified into theoretical smartness and practical smartness. The theoretical smartness acquired by books and working in a profession. Usually someone who is theoretical smart tends to have practical smartness. Meaning if you are a a doctor you are versed in so many other related areas and been called as "street smart". But it is not necessarily true.
Most of the practical smart( street smart) people have huge potential to become "sales people" or "Managers" or "Entrepreneurs". Their exposure and experience brought those attributes to them as they walk their life.
Some of the ways to acquire smartness is from being extrovert, reading books and by doing things.(like learn to change car tires) etc.,
Some people just happen to know so many things like negotiation, adept in saying no etc., and mostly called as smart.
Some people are just lucky to be called smart because they are rich or physically very attractive.

Being smart is having the ability to learn but being wise is far greater. One must know what to do with the knowledge gained in order for it to be of any use, or for it to prove beneficial to the quality of a person's life.
