hi today my sister asked her husband if she had ironed her sons or her daughters shirt and he said well look at the buttons! we did not know that they are on different sides for the different sexes why?? pls help me find out its really annoying me fanx

Because women used to have servants help them dress. Since there were no zippers, the dresses were laced or buttoned. To make buttoning easier for the help they were put on reverse.

Men had buttoned shirts first (first for this modern style of tailored shirt). They put buttons on the opposite side for ladies so that it would be easier for men to take the shirts off of the ladies...and of course vice versa. I was seriously told that this was the reason for this once, in some college class...

DJ DAVA is spot on, back in old times woman were dressed by their servants,So the buttons were put on the opposite side so the servant could easily fasten the buttons.

Dont know but I have wondered myself...could it be so you don't put your husbands shirt or trousers on by accident :)
