how do i host my own domain?

how can i host my own domain, i know about yahoo domain godaddy e.t.c but is there any way i can register my own domain for free somehow. how the hell yahoo godaddy register.com and all of them how right to sell domain.. does it cost them??

if people didnt have to pay and go through a register there would be 1000 people with the ssame name, how would that work. Pay for your name after you do that it is yours.... the money that you pay goes to people who regulate and monitor the mess we call the internet and without them where would we be
