states laws we have in place. I think they should. I think that 16 and 17 year olds shouldn't be having sex. Some states even have "14 if the guy is under 21" laws!. That's just insane. and sometimes because of all these confusing laws that vary from state to state people unknowingly get in trouble. So why don't they just make it a federal law that's easy to understand and make the age of consent 18, period?

The fact that we have some laws which are federal laws and others which are state laws has nothing to do with their importance. The Constitution lays out certain and limited areas which our US Congress can govern. All other issues are left to the states to decide for themselves. Consent is an important issue and should be decided by each state as they see fit. Many states have different laws which make it confusing but that is how our government is set up.

Very well said. It is an issue with the age of consent that can be so confusing. It need to be presented to the legislature. You are absolutely right from state to state, we dont know the laws. bettyk
