Stevie Wonder was born premature and rushed into an incubator, where he received an excess of oxygen, leaving him blind within hours. Worried for his safety, his mother rarely let him out of the house alone, so Wonder amused himself by listening to music on the radio. Soon he was keeping rhythm, and within a few years he was singing in the church choir. He taught himself to play drums and harmonica by the age of five, and started taking piano lessons after that.

Yes.

Stevland Morris was born prematurely in Saginaw, Michigan to Lula Mae Hardaway on May 13, 1950[3] It is thought that he received excessive oxygen levels in his incubator which led to retinopathy of prematurity, a destructive ocular disorder affecting the retina, characterized by abnormal growth of blood vessels, scarring, and sometimes retinal detachment. Common among other prematurely born children in the 1940s and 50s, this is considered to be the ultimate cause of his blindness.

Wonder was born Steveland Hardaway Judkins in Saginaw, MI, on May 13, 1950 (he later altered his name to Steveland Morris when his mother married). A premature infant, he was put on oxygen treatment in an incubator; likely it was an excess of oxygen that exacerbated a visual condition known as retinopathy of prematurity, causing his blindness.
