i want to right a formula that substracts the left cell from the above cell. For example if the active cell is c4, i want the formula to be =c3-a4, the cell above minus the cell to the left. I know I can just do =c3-a4 but is it possible to do something like =[cell above]-[cell left]? is there some special variable to refer to cell above and cell to the left? in this way i can set it up for the entire column

No just do =c3-a4

When you copy that cell into another cell it will automatically change it..

If you click on the bottom right corner of the cell and just drag it all the way down the column, Excel should fill in the formulas for you relative to the cells in that column.

If you do the formula, as you have in your questions, then if you copy and paste the formula it automatically adjusts the cells for you.

If you copy the cell (not the formula) from cell C4 to C5 it will change the formula to =C4-A5

Use the formula you specified in a single cell, then copy it ot the other cells in which you want it to apply. When you copy, Excel should automatically make the adjustments to make it relative to that cell. That is, if you are in cell B2 and you refer to cell A2 in a formula, when you copy that formula to cell C2, it will then refer to cell B2.

I hope this helps!

no just type it in and you can do an auto fill fo rthe one below if you want and why would you want to type all those words when you can just put cell numbers in it. ie the auto fill updates the formula when you drag it to the other cells
