The same reason other "enforcers" are in the league, i.e. Dan Hinote, Donald Brashear, Scott Parker, etc.
Oh, and to the retard who called me a retard, note the quotation marks around the word "enforcers." He is not an enforcer per se, but his main job is to draw penalties from the other team. That is his predominant role, as he is not a big scorer or checker - thus the correlation to people being in the NHL for certain reasons. You might want to actually watch hockey sometime.

Chris Simon has been around the league and has had some good seasons. Yea he fights alot but don't call him a little girl. He's just mad because he's on the Islanders and all they do is play dirty. That was a clean hit by Hollweg(in which Simon also jumped into the boards and then ambelished afterwards). Then the Rangers' start to break out and he just crushes Hollweg across the face. I liked Simon as a Ranger, but once you put on that Islanders jersey something gets to them. Simon should be done for his career because that was a malicious hit and he meant to do it. He's just lucky he didn't hit Hollweg lower, or else we might not have ever seen Hollweg play hockey or even live.

May be an enforcer but probably has better stats than most. He is having a good year with Islanders considering his role and unfortunately did something very stupid last last night. A quick search on youtube will make alot of players look like goons being fighting is very popular. I certainly don't agree with what he did and I expect he'll be punished for it. Thankfully Hollweg wasn't hurt badly.

Chris Simon is an athlete and he has been playing hockey for years. He does more than just fight. That said, what he did was totally malicious and uncalled for. No one should 'talk with their stick' as one answerer suggested. I think he should be suspended for the rest of the season and the playoffs. I have no problem with fighting in hockey but that was not fighting that was revenge with intent to injure and should not be allowed.

What Simon did was terrible but when he first came in the NHL with the Capitals he scored 40 goals so let's not call him a goon just yet.I'm a Ranger fan and I hate him now for what he did to Hollweg but the guy did have talent that's all i'm saying. He's a coward though.

No, I don't agree that he is not an athlete. He is a fighter but he has a 29 goal season under his belt. He has his name on the cup. A quick search on Ryan Hollweg will result in nothing but fights as well. I don't really think you would call him a little girl to his face. Also, fighting is an integral part of the game, if you don't like it then tune into some figure skating or something. Sometimes guys go overboard and lose their temper. Fighting has a place in the game, if you knew anything about hockey, you would know this. Obviously you are not a real fan if you have to ask who he is and do a search on him, so maybe you should keep your opinion to yourself.

He doesn't have any good statistics. That also wasn't his first suspension, he had many other ones before. Like you said, he isn't an athlete and he just creates problems in the league so he should just leave the NHL. He is known for fighting in the league so he should've just fought him instead of wacking him with the stick and injuring him

Simon is a goon, and the decapitation attempt went a little far, even for goons. You need goons to protect your finesse players from other goons. No excuse for attempted murder though.

He's a punk that has no place in the game of hockey. ESPN is reporting that they are considering criminal charges against him. Good idea, jail is where he belongs, with all the other thugs and crooks.
