For the only Superpower, the economic might has to be matched with Military might. If you take the defense budget interms of percentage, it is not that high given the size of American economy $250 billion is not out of proportion.

Conservatives in America are more in-ward looking, they have opposed WW II and Kosovo. They do not want to fight wars that are not America's wars. But 9-11, has given the Neo-Cons (social liberals but hawks in foriegn policy), the opening required to shove the "Benevolent American Power" policy. Which says American should not shy from its Superpower status but rather leverage the power to establish new world in America's image (like Liberal Democratic regimes). The policy obviously failed. But I dont think their policy is no where near "Nazi Supremacy" idealogy. These are well intentioned people with blurred vision of looking at non-americans as "someone who needs to be civilized".

Every power does some arm-twisting and yes, they show the stick. But US in general is not acting as bad as it can.

My answer is no, republicans or democrats or americans in general are happy with the country's world standing (excpet for the fact, there are so many people hating or envious of US). World Domination, is not an American thing.

Is America trying to dominate the world? Well, yeah. It's been involved in doing that for a very long time now. But powerful people also want to keep military spending at Cold War levels even thought the Cold War is over because it is very, very profitable... for them.

We don't need to be spending as much as we do on the military, but ask yourself who stands to lose if we do? I think a lot of Republicans would like a full blown imperial domination of the world. But really, I think that it all comes down to the people who are getting all those military dollars, Halliburton and company. They need us to believe that this kind of expenditure is necessary because it keeps the money rolling in.

Meanwhile, our national infrastructure crumbles, people are without decent health care, schools are underfunded and under performing, people work more hours for less money...

I am an American citizen and proud that we live freely. But since 9/11 we have become almost obsessed with only Americans are welcomed here. Many of us do not like the way our President bullies other Nations. A lot of us don't like him ourself. I can assure you that the people of this Country would not allow that to happen. Only the Anti-christ will be a world dominate and then he meets Al-qaeda in Hell.
I can think of other tyrants world wide we all need to be aware of. We have no desire to be a Nazis tryed.

Its so stupid. With their huge spending and massive new hardware and an insanely big military budget, surgical ability the couldn't beat The North Viet Namese or Iraq. Nor can they protect the innocent.

Yes, it seems that the US and Manifest Destiny is still happening. Even having it's forces bogged down in Iraq Bush and cronies are hinting about invading Iran. They are showing more aggressive words to Cuba as well as countries in Latin America whose past aggressions are still remembered and are bringing people to the streets and burning the American flags, Bush, take the hint!

No, we aren't trying to conquer the entire world (not militarily -- those in power DO want to "rule" it in the sense of telling everyone else what to do).

There are companies that build weapons and otherwise supply the war machine. THEY are why we spend so much on war -- whoops, I mean "defense."

We're number 1! in spending for death

We're number 1! in illiteracy rates, among industrial nations

We're number 1! in infant mortality among industrial nations

Sorry-- a friend of mine used to have a t-shirt that had a whole big list, and the slogan We're number 1! Go, team, go!

For some reason that came to mind.

The U.S. has 13x the money than the others mentioned. If the others had more money, they would spend more. How much does Mexico, Uganda, Ethiopia, etc., spend on their military?

I think it's because our toys are more expensive then Russia or China's. Besides don't you know that CNN is the Communist news network. Crappy news stories.
