My favorite is when I am out in the garden on my hands and knees pulling weeds and my next door neighbor, which lives almost an acre away comes over and ask's "what are you doing? some weeding!
I so badly want to say; Nope, I was bored and decided I would come out and plant some weeds in the garden???

just answer back... no, I was before you came, but I was just listening to you asking me your question :o) (don't say that unless she can take it well and have a light chuckle with you)

I know it could really seem annoying... like I guess it would sound a little better like... "hi, neighbor... long time since we last chatted.... sure is a nice day to do some gardening.... those are really pretty flowers your planting! (and she's not referring that you might have otherwise chosen ugly ones....:o) )

Some people are gifted in the way they strike up conversations to say it like I suggested.... but for the others... they may not be aware of how they are asking you and just mean well.... in which case... acknowledge that and accept them for that apparent flaw (if it can be consider or even called one)... because they are gifted in other ways.

I must admit, I am guilty for doing that... but it is not because I am ungifted in starting up conversations.... it's because I'm just soooo excited to see the person... that I don't think so much on how I word things so as not to annoy or offend... because I'm so overcome by our infrequent rendez-vous. That's all. I mean well.... and don't go out of my way to purposefully annoy people by premeditating to ask questions that way.

It's a way of talking though. Not everything we say is literal 'the sun sets and rises'- it's just a part of culture, many people consider it polite and some people just use it to strike up a conversation.

My favorite is being in uniform at work and having a customer come up and say "do you work here?" duh...no I just like the discount, or no I just like to fit in.

Thank you Captain Obvious

That's annoying I don't like when people do that. It's ridiculous to ask when they can see exactly what you're doing.

no really, it's an ice breaker.

Unless it's really obvious like if you were washing your hair. Then I'd give a smart answer like I'm playing soccer.
