I have virgin hair, but I get it pressed right now, but I want to wear a fro, but my hair is bone straight in some places, what can I do to get that spongy look?

Is your natural texture straight? You can wash it and then braid it while it's still wet. Keep it braided until it drys and then take it down.

I actually have a very kinky afro and it really does depend on the texture of the hair. My hair is thick and very coarse. Also you mentioned that you get your hair pressed. Getting a nice fro will depend on how often you get your hair pressed because over time the heat changes the hair permanently to a straight look. So if you want a nice fro I say leave the heat alone for a while, braid the hair back, then take it down the next morning and pick it out. After doing this for a while the hair with train itself to be more kinky or afro like on its own. Hope this helped.

I have hair that is more curly than afro-y too. My mom said to wash it and put it into about 7 or 8 large plaits. Then when it's dry, unplait it and use a pick to pick it out. I think though that hair texture has a lot to do with it. My daughter's hair is very floppy and so this doesn't work for her. I've learned that my hair is going to curl up no matter what I do and so I wear it as a curly fro. To do this, I wash with conditioner and then while my hair is still very wet I put in IC hair gel and shake my head hard like I'm saying no and the (the hardest part) leave it alone!! Good luck!

The other ladies who answered this question are correct. Pressing the hair continually is probably what caused the straightness.

You may have to cut this hair off, as it may never regain its natural coil.

I'd say stop pressing, get a trim, and roller set your hair. This will give you the fluffy fro look as you gradually trim off the straight sections. They may become more coily over time.

Hope this helps, Kaya
