If you are going to build a site for business purposes, make sure to get your own domain name. Its cheaper than you think. Here is a guide to getting started: http://www.richkahmer.com/build-a-website.html

Once you get your site up you need to build inbound links.
Most of the directories online charge a one time fee to review your site and add it to their index. Here are three of my favorites:

The more inbound links to your site, the better you will rank
with Yahoo / Google / MSN.
Also work on your meta tags. Here is an
article on how they work: http://www.richkahmer.com/meta-tags.html

I don't think the value of the link decreases value because it's reciprocal; however, I think you should only link to sites that you think are worthy to link to not necessarily because it's an exchange. For example, if you have a site that sells weight loss supplements and are exchanging links with a traveling site I believe search engines will see the content on each of these sites and recognize that they aren't related. Search engines are looking for context and by linking to a non-related sites I would imagine that search engines would place less emphasis on the link. A reciprocal link on a links page doesn't mean as much to search engines as a link from a page that is relevant to your business or website. All links pass some type of value and I think its important to gain a variety of types of links. Search engines want to see that your backlink portfolio is natural so acquiring all types of links will help in your overall SEO. I wouldn't focus too much on reciprocal links, most of the time these pages have no page rank and they provide no real value to search engines or users which means these links aren't as valuable as other types of links such as blog links or other links that provide some type of context to search engines.

what style are they going for?

what are they wanting out of the site, what features ect?

what her expectations are?

how she wants it built so that she can easily update it, or wether that will be your responsibility?

what does she want included on the homepage, and how she want the site to be layed out?

you can talk and suggest with her and it will make is alot easier. keep her updated on how things are going and show her as you progress so the finished product is not a suprise and she can tell you what she likes and dosent as you go
