Hand wash them, and scour them with Brillo pads, that will remove the rust. Your knives apparently are not made of stainless steel. (They may be made of hand forged steel) You should not keep putting them in the dishwasher. Hand wash these, and dry them immediately, it will extend their life.

Is there anything stuck in the bottom? Maybe an old spoon that is rusting. Sounds like there's some metal down in it somewhere rusting away. Try running some lime away through it, and use a little on your knives.

They are easy to clean.......the Brillo pad should be enough, otherwise use one of the other cleaners mentioned. Wash in hot soapy water, rinse and hand dry......well. Carbon steel does rust easily and needs this little TLC. On the other hand, it is far easier to sharpen than stainless steel. Also don't throw them into a drawer, store in appropriate slotted device so they don't chip or become dull by banging against other knives.
