I think it's 70s but can't be sure. Scientists are locked in a research centre in the desert as genetically mutated ants attempt to attack them. It's in the same genre as The Andromeda Strain. Anybody know?

Empire Of the Ants starring Joan Collins was shot partly in Qualicum Beach not far from where I live on Vancouver Island.
This was around 1977-78.
Them was much earlier. 50's?
