Not all goalies wear a neck protector. Luongo doesn't wear one. But after that a lot of goalies do where a neck guard. It is not mandated by the NHL to wear one.

Was that the skate to the neck thing? Many goalies now either wear a beaver tail or a neck guard. In fact minor hockey associations across Canada had a rule instituted to make all players where neck guards

At the minor hockey level yes. All players must now wear a neck guard (a wrap around piece of plastic covered in cloth) before they are even allowed on the ice.

Wow, I didn't know anyone even remembered what happened to him. I haven't heard his name mentioned in years. I was only 15 when it happened and it's something I'll never forget it.

Mike Richter, former Ranger's goalie, helped design a neck protector that many goalies now wear.

Because of his injury, NHL goalies were mandated to wear neck protectors.

Added- AFTER THE MALARCHUK INJURY, THE NHL INSTITUTED A POLICY THAT ALL GOALIES WEAR NECK PROTECTION.
