Try Anne Mc Caffrey's Pern series. Wonderful books about a planet with dragons and dragonriders.

Seriously. There is no other series of books in this world that you need to read before you read The Dark Tower Series by Stephen King. It is completely unlike anything you have ever read before..... ever! The first book is very "westerny" but after that, it dives into fantasy, scifi and real world stuff, all rolled into one. It is the best series of books I have EVER read. And I am an avid reader. I too, loved and still love the Harry Potter Series. So, I think that you will love The Dark Tower!!!

Between series I usually read the Alex Rider series, about a teenage spy in MI6, and I have started reading the Tom Clancy fiction novels. I also read the DArren Shan series, about a half vampire that's a horror series so i don't know if you'll like them.

I would recommend the Bartimaeus trilogy by Jonathan Stroud. The Amulet of Samarkand, Golem's Eye, and Ptolemy's Gate.

Madeline L'Engle (that might be misspelled) wrote some great young-adult sci-fi, most notably "A Wrinkle in Time." For more adultish stuff, you might find Philip K. Dick interesting. He wrote "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" and "A Scanner Darkly," both made into films. Roald Dahl may also be to your liking. Both his adult and children's stuff is great.
