I'm 14.
I started my menstrual cycle for the first time on July 23 of last year..
Since then my periods have been screwed.
I have once a month.
At first it was ok, then in about Novemeber I started bleeding very heavy and cramping verrryy bad, to the point I had to leave school multiple times and has been up until 3am trying to find a position that would ease them.
In January, my period was 2 weeks straight, heavy bleeding.
Then in February I had no period at all.
I started my period on March 2nd and so far I'm still on. My were horrible but stopped the night of two days ago and never came back since I stocked on pills
My mom said I might have to go to the hospital and take birth control pills to help regulate my periods and ease the cramping a tad bit..
Should I go do it? Is my mom right?
Also: I pass blood clots alot. Once, I passed some as big as a half dollar quarter.
If I do take the pills, will it make me gain weight? Im not worried about it but some people say it.

This is not normal! Unless your mom is a doctor, she should not diagnose your problem or determine your treatment - but she could call and get you in to see a gynocologist who can. Whether or not you will need to take birth control pills to regulate your cycle will be determined then. Hope you feel better :-).

When you first start your period it might take a long time to actually get on a regular cycle, and some women never do and need birth control to actually get on one.

If you give it time you should start a normal cycle. When I first started my period it was different every month and I never knew when I would start. About a year and a half-two years later I could tell you the exact day I would start without fail.

Cramps and pain is really normal during a period, and even now I get them so bad I can hardly stand it. It doesn't mean anything is wrong with you, it is normal. To relieve the pain at night you can try a heat pad on your back, or you can elevate your legs with pillows. They say if your legs/feet are higher than your head when laying down it helps.

The best thing you can do is take as many Midol/Women's tylenol you are allowed to take. When I am on my period I take the recommended dose on a regular basis.

It is also normal to pass blood clots as long as they are not HUGE and all the time. It just means there is so much blood that they are created.

I was also on birth control and it actually helped alot. My periods were done within a certain amount of time, they were not as heavy at all, the cramping was done alot, and it was better. I did not gain weight from using the pill (and if you eat right/exercise that should not be an issue). I think personally if they are that bad for you it would be a good idea just so you can get through it. You don't want to be miserable.

I noticed that when you get older you are able to deal with it better. Then when you have children they seem to be alot easier too. So don't worry, your time is coming when it will all get straightened out.

Be sure to always keep track of your bleeding by marking it in a calendar, how heavy it is, anything abnormal. This helps doctors to evaluate what might be going on. You also wouldn't have to go to the hospital, you could just go to the regular doctor office to someone who could give you a pap smear (they give one to everyone before putting you on the pill).

For the heavy periods, the pill is the way to go. Not only will it help regulate your cycle, but you will feel less cramping and lighter periods. It will help you feel normal again!

For the weight gaining, it's kinda hard to say. It might be the pill or just your body growing. Most of the weight gain is from water retention, so keep it low on the salt. Personally, I've never noticed a huge difference in weight gain from pill takers.

For the clots, don't worry, it goes with the heavy period. A clot here and there is quite normal. But keep an eye out for massive bleeding of fresh red blood or huge clots.

Periods are usually irregular during the first year of menstruation until they become more established. However, I am concerned that you are having heavy, prolonged bleeding with cramps and clots. I don't think you need to go to the hospital -- at least not yet. I would make an appointment, or have your mom make one, with a gynecologist. That's a doctor that specializes in women's diseases -- just to make sure there is nothing abnormal in your reproductive system. She may then prescribe the pill just to ease your discomfort and help your cycles become more regular. The pill will not make you gain weight -- at least I've never heard of that. But it will make you more regular with your periods, make them lighter, shorter, and less painful. Good luck, dear.

are u having sex yet? if you are then the blood clots could have been a miscarriage. other than that, when i first started my period they were irregular all the time. birth control pills will make it so much easier, hardly any cramps and very light bleeding, i usually only have my period for 3 days and I'm on ortho try cyclen. i didn't gain any weight at all, just watch what you eat and you should be fine.

I have the same problem, i first got my period 7 years ago and til this day i have that problem. it is not as bad as it use to be but it's still a problem. i suggest taking birth control pills, that will help regulate it and it will definitely help with the cramping. i could tell you that you won't gain weight because i didn't, but everyone is different so who knows how your metabolism will react to it. other than that your mom is right and you should really go see a gynecologist.

I know you said that you prefer that girls answer but I have some insight too. I've been married to my wife for 18 years this Sept.. Your symptoms sound VERY similar to hers. First and foremost, see your gynecologist! You don't want to miss anything that could be fixed if acted upon early. Your doctor may mention endemitriosis. This is a scarring or malformation around the opening of the cervix. And can be fixed with outpatient surgery. As far as the birth control pills helping, absolutely! She is never as happy as she is when she's on BC even tho we aren't trying or not trying to have kids.

I had the same problem when I was your age. I was put on b/c pills and it helped ALOT. My cramping was so bad I would have to go to the ER and get a shot. I never noticed weight gain but it is possible. You really should consider the pills though. Your mom is right.

Taking Birth Control pills should definitely help regulate your periods, because it's basically charting your body's patterns, and after your body gets used to it, you'll always know exactly when you're going to get your period.

When I went on the pill last year, I made sure to find one that didn't make me gain weight, and my doctor prescribed me 'Kariva'. I haven't gained any noticeable weight from that one, but then again I didn't need to take it for sporadic periods. You'll prob. get something that's prescribed a lot differently, but you can at least ask about it. Hope that helped!

What you described is what I went through as a teen. However, bleeding for more than a week is not normal.

Yes, you should get on the pill to regulate your periods. That's what I ended up doing. Eventually your periods will get lighter too.

For me, the pill didn't cause me to gain weight, but for some girls it does. You just have to eat sensibly and get plenty of exercise to keep your weight normal.

Good luck. :)
