Well, let's consider time into this as a factor.
At the turn of the century, soft drinks had a stopper inside the bottle, and a wire loop extended to the outside of the bottle. To open your drink, you would hold the bottle in one hand, and hit the wire loop with the palm of your other hand. Usually that was followed with a report or "POP."
Then came the drug store ice cream and carbonated fountain. The carbonation was from different things. Remember the Cherry Phosphate? Well, if you don't that's OK. Anyhow, that was called soda because some form of soda was used to carbonate the water. AND the dude behind the counter was called a soda jerk!
Coca-Cola became so popular that many people used the name "coke" for short to order a Coca-Cola. It stuck, and many people still to date use the word "coke" to order a pop or soda, not realizing there are other flavors To order.
I drink Dr. Pepper. Many restaurants serve Mr. Pibb. So I always have my Little speech to make: "Well, bring me a slice of lemon so I can cover up the taste." Or "I hope this doesn't reflect on how my food is going to taste.

Soda, man!
Coke only if I'm referring to a Coca-Cola product, like diet Coke, cherry coke, etc.
Pop is for Yankees.

Get over yourself - in the midwest everyone calls it pop (short for soda pop). Coke refers to a specific brand, and even cola refers a certain flavor, so they are both a little too specific to apply to all soda.
Why do you have your panties in a twist about this? Is it really that slow of an afternoon?

when I lived in the midwest, I called it "pop". when I lived on the east coast, I called it "soda". now I live in the south and we call it soda again. I only call the actual coke "coke. then there's the ever popular co'cola.
