Yes, but graphite my be a little harder to erase on canvas than paper because of the texture. I suggest sketching lightly.

Yes.

But, if you are using oils it can create problems because the graphite may show through areas that are given transparent glazes.

Try using a hard pencil 2H or 3H, and sketching very lightly. Keep a more detailed sketch or "cartoon" (the technical term) of what you want to paint closer to hand so that you can adjust what you are painting after the outlines are no longer visible.

you can use anything you want, its your painting. since you talking bout canvas, i think you are using oil or acrylic as your medium. when you are starting to paint over pencil, you will see that the gray of the pencil will bleeds into the paint make it looks gray or muddy. you won't get the fresh vibrant look of the oil paint look anymore.
I suggest you mix a thin wash of earth tone like yellow ochre or burnt sienna or burnt umber to sketch it with.

yes, but beware--it's hard to remove and if you're using oils or watercolors...anything actually, the lead could blend in and darken the color. good luck!
