I am writing a YA book, but I am not sure which state would make a good setting. California has been done so many times, so do you know any other good states? Maybe even somewhere in Canada?

That would depend entirely on what kind of story you are writing and what kind of setting and characters you want. Think of your characters first, then decide where they live. California is a huge state. Maybe you can choose a part of it that's different. Sacramento? San Diego? Or any place in between.

A state doesn't necessarily have to be specified, just describe the town and surroundings.
