Actually life is incredibly fragile. If our planet didn't have the protection of the Ozone layer the solar radiation would destroy any life that tried to prosper beyond the depths of the oceans. We are located just close enough to the Sun that it gives us energy but far enough away that the magnetism of the core shields Earth from the "solar wind".Under these rare circumstances the planet developed an atmosphere. In addition,we have a moon that may have absorbed the impact of many asteroids rather than hitting our world.

I am not a religious person but I can’t help but think that this is the work of something else or someone else not purely chance, I sometimes get the feeling that we are nothing more then rats in an experiment. You never know we may or may not be the only living things in this universe. You may think that we make but a small % of it now but this could change.

Life is the complex interaction of many different elements and compounds. An element is just a single molecule. It's just a matter of complexity.

Because the right combination of environmental factors is rare. You don't need any combination of factors at all to have non-living elements, they are everywhere in universe (except in a neutron star or black hole) even in living things.

Actually, if you consider consciousness living, then everything is alive. Electrons make desicions on wether they want to be a part of an atom, or not. Since everything in reality has electrons, that would make everything living, in that aspect.
