I am sorry for your loss. There are groups for others that have the same loss. The best one on the web is called "Rainbow bridge" you might want to check it out. As I was a vet tech for 18 years and seen many go through the loss, including myself, I think being able to get another pet when you are ready does help with the pain. I have never loved my new cat as I did the one I lost, but he is so funny and very affectionate.
As Rose Kennedy says in her auto biography, para phrased,
As time goes on the pain doesn't last as long and doesn't come as often, but it never goes away completely. I think that is very true.

Your question has two answers, but the sadness you are experiencing is the same:

If your pet ran away and is gone...the chances are slim that it will return.

If your pet died...just take one day at a time. Put away his dish (I'm guessing it is a male), his bed, bones, and toys.

Give away any of his dog food to someone that can use it.

The point is, to get rid of all reminders in the short term.

It takes time. My dog, was my friend, she died a few weeks ago. Sure I miss her...but I accept it.

Don't get another dog soon. One day you will want another...and the sadness will ease a little.

Take care,

Bob

Im so sorry. What animal did you have?
I had the most beautiful siamese cat for over 13 years. He was my friend through the whole of my teens, into adulthood and I comletley adored him. Every day of those 13 years I would rush home from school to be with him, and finally I raced home from work everyday to be with him. He loved life and had the most demanding, cheeky personality. He made everyone laugh all the time with the outragious things he did.

He died from kidney failure nearly three years ago. I still cry for him now, and life has moved on. Im nearly 29 and married. But I will never forget this wonderful animal that brought such pleasure into my life. His whole character was one in amillion. But the one comfort to me is that he was happy and well cared for. He gave as much love back to our family as we gave him.

Time will ease the pain of you loosing your pet, and friend. But dont ever forget them. Good luck x x

I know people who have lost pets, you need to grieve just like if a person who has died. People who treat their pets like family will feel it the hardest, pets are very often companions, so when you get your new pet. Nothing can take the place of a lost one.

When i lost my pet he was gone for a week and we thought that he was dead and what i did is i went into my room and cried i know it seems that it doesn't help at all but really letting all that sadness and things like that out it helps and then like a previous answer when you think you are ready get that new pet like a puppy or something b/c to think that little puppy that you gets needs you also and just throw all of your love on him/her love her till' she spoiled lol. don't worry it will pass. you may never forget about your animal but you wont feel as bad.

do you mean "lost pet"??...Well im the type who wont rest until I find my pooch. Its like a panic attack until I see him. So it truly isnt anything you can get over, just hope and pray that he or she is well and being taken care of. Also I would call the local police dept to inform them of the missing doggie and for them to contact you if they get any info on it, also put up pictures in the neighborhood of the missing dog so people are aware.
