My approach would be,

What features for a console are you looking for?
What ages are the primary users for the console?
Do you own any previous systems?

I would primarily stick to those 3 questions for the following reasons:

1. The 3 primary gaming consoles, Xbox 360, PS3, and Wii all have very different features.

Xbox 360 is best known for the online play capabilites.
PS3 is sporting the new Blu-ray disc technology.
Wii is fully backwards compatible with GameCube games.

2. Nintendo Wii is typically marketed towards younger consumers and families. If you see younger kids with the parents that is a good clue to pitch the Wii.

3. One of the great features of the Wii is the fact that it is not only backwards compatible with all of the GameCube games, but it also has many N64, Super Nintendo and NES game available for download.
